Tata Engineering to delayer setup

Automobile major Tata Engineering has initiated a move to delayer its organizational structure wherein it proposes to cut down the hierarchical levels from the existing 9-10 levels to 6.

The move is part of the work-level study being conducted within the group for which A. F. Ferguson and Shilputsi have been roped in for strategic advice.

A Tata Engineering spokesperson said : "The delayering under the process of work-level study is being done to make the organization flatter. From the structural point of view, the work levels 1 to 6 will exactly define the job content and the idea is to equate jobs of similar nature across the group".

This will ensure mobility across the organization as well as across the different companies within the group. The management will get the opportunity to work at different departments within the organization beside the opportunity to work in different group companies, the spokesperson added.

Currently, the top level executives are being interviewed and A. F. Ferguson and Shilputsi are conceptualizing the ‘strategic job contents’ of the different levels and identifying where a particular job fits into the organization.

"The levels are being identified based on the jobs and not on individuals", he added.

Meanwhile, according to senior company officials, a working committee was formed that made a presentation on the scope of the ‘work level study’ to the senior management.

On being asked about the redundancies, the officials refused to comment and said that a decision was yet to be taken on the ‘misfits’ at each level.

The Tata group is in the process of initiating the human resource (HR) exercise across all major group companies that comprises of around 75 per cent of the overall group size. The HR project will be accomplished in phases as the entire initiative can not be undertaken simultaneously across all the group companies considering the size of the group.

For instance, Tata Steel, which had embarked on the delayering exercise a year ago, is at present conclusing the move and is followed by Tata Engineering.
