He should steer another
course’ – Financial
Express: January 8, 2005 Ravi has an interesting career dilemma. He is professionally qualified with an impressive academic profile. Clearly, his motivation to join Mindshare Global Software was his personal relationship with the brothers especially Dilip, supported by significant increase in job title and remuneration. He represents the commonly found managerial combination of professional competence and personal relationship, where it’s difficult to determine the proportion of each. Having been attracted by the growth prospects of the company as well as its management, he must take responsibility for his fate and weigh his options accordingly. Ravi has excellent qualifications and a resume to match. He can leverage these since his domain specialization is universal. Therefore, he has either option open to him, that of staying back or going to the US. If Ravi chooses to stay back in the company, there is a chance his loyalty, performance and capability will help Sunil consolidate and focus business direction and growth. The assumption is that Sunil trusts Ravi enough to involve him, since he may be perceived as Dilip’s ally! There is also a possibility that Dilip may not take active interest and/or pull in the same direction of the business. Only if these situations do not occur, will Ravi find the atmosphere congenial and conducive for success. The assumptions cannot be under estimated. On the other hand, Ravi’s option is to move to the US. It will certainly make his wife happy and a well handled amicable separation may even retain threads of a valuable old friendship. Ravi’s background and chosen field of specialization has high applicability and he is likely to find opportunities in large professional set-ups free of individual objectives and clashing personal aspirations. This may mean losing some part of a relationship and even a feeling of abandoning the ship mid way. This apprehension may remain for a while, but with time Ravi and the Chabria brothers will view the whole episode differently. While Ravi may be tempted to stay and represent himself as a team member and dependable soldier, he must realise that this crossroad is about his personal career choice and not just his relationship, which in any case is strained and convoluted at the moment! He is senior management, yet not a promoter. Nor is he related by blood. In any event, it is likely his contribution will be counted as that of an outsider! Ravi must realise professional career decisions are different from decisions taken on a racetrack in school. Quitting an organisation cannot be interpreted as lack of dedication and emotional bond. Sunil once walked out of a winning race to help his brother—a decision that was selfless yet selfish because it was his own brother he was helping. However, somebody did finish that race, and take the trophy home. Similarly, someone will replace Ravi and reach Mindshare to its destination and aspirations. If the route doesn’t agree with Ravi, he should steer another course. It seems like this is a more feasible option. The author is director, Shilputsi Consultants |
